BACKGROUND

In response to the need for greater improved movement of bulk liquids, tank containers were invented in the mid 1960 by Bob Fossey who worked for Wiliams Fairclough in London. This first tank was a beam type designed in 1967 built onto a swap body design from Fossey  in 1966. Through the following decades tanks have evolved to become a lighter and more space efficient means of transporting bulk liquids.

The tank container chassis was specifically designed with a lower deck (typically 40”) to hold these specialty containers. Tanks experience a greater risk of turn-over accidents due to their bulk liquid shifting contents. The drop frame of the tank chassis has a lower center of gravity to offset this phenomenon. The longer length of the tank chassis allows for it to legally scale most loaded tanks. The tank container chassis has bolsters and twistlocks like a standard container chassis to provide a secure mounting mechanism and eliminate the need for straps or chains.

The standard tank chassis is the closed tandem drop frame chassis. This chassis is capable of effectively hauling most tank containers and is more readily found on the used market. Tri-axle tank container chassis have a higher GVWR of 80,000 lbs. ideal for carrying heavier product loads. The spread axle tank chassis offers the lighter tare weight accomplished by only two axles, but due to its axle spread it too can legally scale many of the heavy weight tanks.

Most recently we now offer a short 31 ft. drop frame chassis especially suited for tank carriage in the Caribbean and Latin America. The short length of the drop frame chassis also makes it ideal for in-plant usage.

Overall this drop frame tank container chassis is the only safe and legal way to transport all your hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquid cargos in tank containers.
